Football is responsible for about 100,000 concussions a year

Football and other recreational sports have been responsible for more than 750,000 head trauma incidents last year. 100,000 of those injuries were recieved during football games. Football is a dangerous sport, but who knew how dangerous it really is. WebMD released a statement last week noting that new helmets will soon be on the way for youth and proffessional players. The horrific magnitude of concussion injuries can be seen from the following statistics:

* Each year, more than 750,000 Americans report traumas sustained during recreational sports, with 82,000 involving brain injuries. The latter cause more deaths than any other sports injury. In football, for instance, brain injury accounts for 65-85% of of all fatalities.

* According to the National Football League Commissioner’s Office, football injuries associated with the brain occur at a rate of one in every 3.5 games.

* In a given football season, 10% of all college and 20% of high school players sustain a brain injury.

* Football is responsible for approximately 100,000 concussions each year in the U.S.

* Football players with a brain injury are six times as likely to sustain another one.

* Approximately five percent of soccer players receive a brain injury from head-to-head contact, falls, or being struck by a ball on the head.

* Among children and adolescents, brain injury is most common in winter sports such as ice hockey, skiing, sledding, and ice skating, accounting for 46% of all traumas.
