NFL Record: Who Ran The Fastest 40 Yard Dash?

You won’t believe this. The fastest 40 yard dash recorded by the NFL was recorded in 1989. Remember this was before the great technology advances that gave us the electronic stop watch. You ready? Deion Sanders stopped a non-electronic clock at 4.29 seconds. Some have witnessed 1 year pro Texan’s wide out Jerome Mathis run the 40 in 4.26 seconds, but it was not officially documented.

    BO JACKSON RAN A 4.18 40 YARD DASH…

  3. G on December 8th, 2007 2:53 am

Bo was the fastest I ever saw…in pads. Running a 40 in shorts is ridiculous…

  4. Brett on December 12th, 2007 5:10 pm

I read somewhere just the other day that Deion Sanders ran a 4.17. It also said that he ran a 4.57 40 backwards.

  5. Joe on February 5th, 2008 4:17 am

deion sanders ran 4.17 bo jackson ran 4.23 and devin hester ran 4.27 and those are the fastest 3 i’ve ever seen. and deion sanders is definately the fastest player i’ve ever seen, in pads or out of pads. i remember near the end of his career they used to put him out there as a wide out and have him just run go routes.

Donte’ Stallworth reportedly ran a 4.18 at Pro Day in college, but if you believe that’s legit I have some land I’d like to sell you…

  12. Coach Brent on February 24th, 2008 5:09 pm

If you have been watching the NFL Pro Combines, well there is a guy from Appalachian State, Dexter Jackson who ran a 4.27 in the 40 at the combines this weekend. I do believe the poster above is accurate about Deion Sanders’ time and him being the fastest person recorded to date. Well this years rookie class of NFL athletes seems to have many speedsters in the 4.27-4.3 40 yard time which is impressive. But having 4.17 like Deion did is just unreal, you will always have an extra step on someone, hence how Neon Deion was able to return so many punts and kickoffs for TD’s and why the cowboys put him as a wideout his last few years in the league.

  13. Rusty on February 24th, 2008 7:53 pm

actually, i think darrell green, the old cornerback from the redskins ran a 4.09 before the official partial electronic timing. I know that bo jackson was timed at 4.12, and hester was a 4.45 at the actual 2006 combine. But you have to remember that there are about 10 seperate timings of each 40. Fastest in the nfl right now is michael bennett with a 4.13

Many players with incredible “reported” times have also done amazing things in the NFL, for example: Darrell Green ran an unofficial 4.09[citation needed] in training camp for the Washington Redskins. He is considered by many as one of the best corners of all time. Many see him as the fastest man in NFL history, having won several NFL’s Fastest Man competitions.

    * Bo Jackson ran a 4.12[2]. As a part-time player, Bo averaged 5.4 yards per carry. He also had 221 rushing yards on November 30, 1987 (just 29 days after his first NFL carry), which is still a Monday Night Football record.
    * DeAngelo Hall, a cornerback currently playing for the Atlanta Falcons, ran a 4.15 second 40 yard dash.[citation needed]
    * Randy Moss, a wide receiver currently playing for the New England Patriots, ran a 4.25 second 40 yard dash.[citation needed] Moss currently holds the rookie TD reception record with 17 and the single-season TD reception record with 23.
    * Devin Hester ran a disappointing 4.45 40 at the 2006 NFL Scouting Combine, but is now considered one of the best kick returners in NFL history and holds numerous return records.[citation needed]
    * Reggie Bush ran a 4.33, in 2006,[citation needed] he was the only rookie and the only running back to score a rushing TD and punt return TD. He also led the rookie running backs in receiving and set the NFL record for most catches by a NFL rookie running back
    * Heisman Trophy winner, Herschel Walker was said to have run a 4.25 (hand-timed) also for the Dallas Cowboys.[citation needed] He was a notable sprinter who also ran in the Olympic Trials.
    * Darren McFadden ran a 4.33 at the NFL Combine on February 23, 2008.

The Fastest Players in the NFL include the following.

    1. Devin Hester (4.24 @ Miami Pro Day, 4.45 @ 2006 NFL Combine, 100 speed in Madden 08)[3]
    2. Reggie Bush (4.33 @ University of USC at Pro Day 2006)[3]
    3. Ike Taylor (4.18 @ University of Louisiana at Lafayette Pro Day)[4]
    4. Laveranues Coles (4.16 @ Florida State University, 4.29 @ Jets Media Guide)[3]
    5. Ahman Green (4.19 @ Pre-Draft Workout in Nebraska)[3]
    6. Kevin Curtis (4.21 @ Utah State Pro Day)
    7. Donte Stallworth (4.22 @ 2003 Tennessee Pro Day)[3]
    8. Willie Parker (4.23 @ 2004 North Carolina Pro Day)[3]
    9. Randy Moss (4.25 @ Marshall University)[3]
    10. Fabian Washington (4.29 @ 2005 NFL Combine)[3]
    11. Champ Bailey (4.28 @ 1999 NFL Combine)[3]
    12. Jerome Mathis (4.28 @ 2005 NFL Combine)[3]
    13. Willis McGahee (4.28 @ Miami Pre-Injury)[3]
    14. Michael Bennett (4.17 @ Wisconsin Pro Day, 4.37 @ 2001 NFL Combine)[3]

All these times, official or non official, electronicly recorded or not, are so close who really gives a flying crapola? On any given day, Reggie Bush could beat Donte Stallworth or vise versa. Bo Jackson could outrun Deion Sanders or vise versa.

Everyone says that Deion was the fastest ever so he probably was, but I’ve seen 12 diferent recorded times for him in this forum thread alone.

And who’s the retard who posted a time of 3.9 for Joey Galloway? You’re an idiot.

Oh yeah, and I just ran a 3.26

  25. the real truth on February 25th, 2008 8:49 pm

  34. Crash on February 25th, 2008 10:15 pm

Actually William “the Refridgerator” Perry would have had the fastest 40 yard dash if he could have made it that far… he reportedly had the fastest 20 yard dash @ 2.14 seconds, and that was going thru the buffet line, running over 3 people all the way to his table… true story…

THERE WERE 3-4 KIDS THAT RAM 39.5 TOO 4.0 FLAT THIS KID RAN 3.60 AND WAS PICKING UP SPEED. IT WAS A FACE MELTER, UNBELIEVEABLE. 66. Getrealfellas on April 29th, 2008 2:51 pm

Take this for what it’s worth. And talk football. Yall got away from the subject. The Gilbert Brown, Warren Sapp, and the Fridge thing was funny.Take this for what it’s worth”Regarding the fastest 40 ever run by an NFL player, there are lots of players noted to have been clocked around 4.1, such as Darrell Green, Deion Sanders, Raghib Ismail, Joey Galloway to name but a few. There are also many notable burners over the years who could have no doubt ran in the 4.1 range, such as Willie Gault, Bob Hayes, Cliff Branch and so on. There have been pure sprinters who have tried their hands at pro football who also should be mentioned, such as Renaldo Nehemiah, Alexnander Wright and Jimmy Hines”

  67. its on May 7th, 2008 5:35 pm

    its darell green…look it up

Many consider him “The NFL’s Fastest Man.” His fastest 40 yard dash was 4.09 in 1986. It is the fastest legitimate time ever recorded.

  68. Saaakke on May 8th, 2008 6:19 pm

ive heard Darrell Green ran a 4.12
