NFL Record: Who Ran The Fastest 40 Yard Dash?

You won’t believed it at 4.29 seconds however some have reported even faster speeds. One individual went on record as saying he witnessed 1 year pro Texan’s wide out Jerome Mathis run the 40 in 4.26 seconds, but it was not officially documented as it was hand timed. Anyone have anything that can beat that?

Worth noting, evidently this kid does it in a 4.44 … and he’s 13..

Actually William "the Refridgerator" Perry would have had the fastest 40 yard dash if he could have made it that far... he reportedly had the fastest 20 yard dash @ 2.14 seconds, and that was going thru the buffet line, running over 3 people all the way to his table... true story...

BO JACKSON RAN A 4.18 40 YARD DASH...
  • G
Bo was the fastest I ever saw...in pads. Running a 40 in shorts is ridiculous...
  • Joe
deion sanders ran 4.17 bo jackson ran 4.23 and devin hester ran 4.27 and those are the fastest 3 i've ever seen. and deion sanders is definately the fastest player i've ever seen, in pads or out of pads. i remember near the end of his career they used to put him out there as a wide out and have him just run go routes.
  • Mr. Fumbles

Donte' Stallworth reportedly ran a 4.18 at Pro Day in college, but if you believe that's legit I have some land I'd like to sell you...
  • If you have been watching the NFL Pro Combines, well there is a guy from Appalachian State, Dexter Jackson who ran a 4.27 in the 40 at the combines this weekend. I do believe the poster above is accurate about Deion Sanders' time and him being the fastest person recorded to date. Well this years rookie class of NFL athletes seems to have many speedsters in the 4.27-4.3 40 yard time which is impressive. But having 4.17 like Deion did is just unreal, you will always have an extra step on someone, hence how Neon Deion was able to return so many punts and kickoffs for TD's and why the cowboys put him as a wideout his last few years in the league.
  • Rusty
actually, i think darrell green, the old cornerback from the redskins ran a 4.09 before the official partial electronic timing. I know that bo jackson was timed at 4.12, and hester was a 4.45 at the actual 2006 combine. But you have to remember that there are about 10 seperate timings of each 40. Fastest in the nfl right now is michael bennett with a 4.13
  • Rusty
    this is according to nflfortyyarddash.com

Many players with incredible "reported" times have also done amazing things in the NFL, for example: Darrell Green ran an unofficial 4.09[citation needed] in training camp for the Washington Redskins. He is considered by many as one of the best corners of all time. Many see him as the fastest man in NFL history, having won several NFL's Fastest Man competitions.

    * Bo Jackson ran a 4.12[2]. As a part-time player, Bo averaged 5.4 yards per carry. He also had 221 rushing yards on November 30, 1987 (just 29 days after his first NFL carry), which is still a Monday Night Football record.
    * DeAngelo Hall, a cornerback currently playing for the Atlanta Falcons, ran a 4.15 second 40 yard dash.[citation needed]
    * Randy Moss, a wide receiver currently playing for the New England Patriots, ran a 4.25 second 40 yard dash.[citation needed] Moss currently holds the rookie TD reception record with 17 and the single-season TD reception record with 23.
    * Devin Hester ran a disappointing 4.45 40 at the 2006 NFL Scouting Combine, but is now considered one of the best kick returners in NFL history and holds numerous return records.[citation needed]
    * Reggie Bush ran a 4.33, in 2006,[citation needed] he was the only rookie and the only running back to score a rushing TD and punt return TD. He also led the rookie running backs in receiving and set the NFL record for most catches by a NFL rookie running back
    * Heisman Trophy winner, Herschel Walker was said to have run a 4.25 (hand-timed) also for the Dallas Cowboys.[citation needed] He was a notable sprinter who also ran in the Olympic Trials.
    * Darren McFadden ran a 4.33 at the NFL Combine on February 23, 2008.

The Fastest Players in the NFL include the following.

    1. Devin Hester (4.24 @ Miami Pro Day, 4.45 @ 2006 NFL Combine, 100 speed in Madden 08)[3]
    2. Reggie Bush (4.33 @ University of USC at Pro Day 2006)[3]
    3. Ike Taylor (4.18 @ University of Louisiana at Lafayette Pro Day)[4]
    4. Laveranues Coles (4.16 @ Florida State University, 4.29 @ Jets Media Guide)[3]
    5. Ahman Green (4.19 @ Pre-Draft Workout in Nebraska)[3]
    6. Kevin Curtis (4.21 @ Utah State Pro Day)
    7. Donte Stallworth (4.22 @ 2003 Tennessee Pro Day)[3]
    8. Willie Parker (4.23 @ 2004 North Carolina Pro Day)[3]
    9. Randy Moss (4.25 @ Marshall University)[3]
    10. Fabian Washington (4.29 @ 2005 NFL Combine)[3]
    11. Champ Bailey (4.28 @ 1999 NFL Combine)[3]
    12. Jerome Mathis (4.28 @ 2005 NFL Combine)[3]
    13. Willis McGahee (4.28 @ Miami Pre-Injury)[3]
    14. Michael Bennett (4.17 @ Wisconsin Pro Day, 4.37 @ 2001 NFL Combine)[3]

All these times, official or non official, electronicly recorded or not, are so close who really gives a flying crapola? On any given day, Reggie Bush could beat Donte Stallworth or vise versa. Bo Jackson could outrun Deion Sanders or vise versa.

Everyone says that Deion was the fastest ever so he probably was, but I've seen 12 diferent recorded times for him in this forum thread alone.

And who's the retard who posted a time of 3.9 for Joey Galloway? You're an idiot.

Oh yeah, and I just ran a 3.26

Bo jackson-4.12---known as one of the fastest times ever
    Micheal Vick-4.25---fastest of all his times(not a 4.28 or 4.27 exactly 4.25)

Johnnie lee Higgans-4.19---(an avrg of his times!)
Randy Moss-4.13---fastest of all his times

  • TM
Can't call the high school kid a "dum dum" when you think 20yds is the distance from home to first. base to base in baseball in 90 feet has been for a long time...now who is the retard. Next time before you try to call out a high school kid make sure your facts are correct.
  • Ted Ginn Jr. that dude is fassst

JOEY GALLOWAY IS THE FASTEST IN THE NFL EVER.ANY BODY WHO DISAGREES IS A DUMDASS!
  • Getrealfellas
Take this for what it's worth. And talk football. Yall got away from the subject. The Gilbert Brown, Warren Sapp, and the Fridge thing was funny.Take this for what it's worth"Regarding the fastest 40 ever run by an NFL player, there are lots of players noted to have been clocked around 4.1, such as Darrell Green, Deion Sanders, Raghib Ismail, Joey Galloway to name but a few. There are also many notable burners over the years who could have no doubt ran in the 4.1 range, such as Willie Gault, Bob Hayes, Cliff Branch and so on. There have been pure sprinters who have tried their hands at pro football who also should be mentioned, such as Renaldo Nehemiah, Alexnander Wright and Jimmy Hines"
  • its
    its darell green...look it up

Many consider him "The NFL's Fastest Man." His fastest 40 yard dash was 4.09 in 1986. It is the fastest legitimate time ever recorded.
  • Saaakke
ive heard Darrell Green ran a 4.12
  • Lindell Johnson
There is no official world record for 40 yards, BUT here's some of the material and times that has been reported:
Many reported times are unreliable due to differences in timing methods if not intentional falsifications. The NFL did not begin using partial electronic timing (started by hand, stopped electronically) at the Scouting Combine until 1990.
In track and field races, the runner must react to the starting gun, which can take 0.10 to 0.20 seconds. For electronically timed 40 yard dashes, the runner is allowed to start when he wishes, and a timer hand-starts the clock (after a reaction time of 0.10 to 0.20 seconds).
Although the 40-yard dash is not an official race in track and field, the 60 meter dash is an official distance in indoor track and field, with the world record for that race being 6.39 seconds (run twice by Maurice Greene, and once by Ben Johnson, whose record was annulled for Steroids). The fastest 60m split time is probably 6.32 seconds by Asafa Powell, in his 9.74 second 100m World Record run in Rieti, Italy. Fast starting elite sprinters such as Powell (and others past and present) can run a "Football 40" close to 4 seconds, because the sprinter does not have to react to the sound of the gun, and the starter has to react to their movement before the clock starts. In the 2001 World Championship 100m final in Edmonton, Greene covered 30m in 3.75 seconds running time and 40m in 4.64 seconds running time, putting his 40 yard (36.576m) running time at about 4.24 seconds. Given a hypothetical timer's reaction time to Greene's motion, Greene's "Football 40" time for this race would have been between 4.00 and 4.14 seconds. Billy Emory ran the fastest time ever at 3.89 during an Olympic trial. .
There actually is no single, "official" 40 time at the NFL Combine. National Scouting, which runs the combine, provides three times per run, two fully hand-held and one stopped electronically. Each player may run twice, thereby yielding a potential six times. National Scouting provides all six of these times to NFL teams. The teams then do what they want with those times, or ignore them. Some teams use the best electronic time. Some teams throw out the fastest and slowest and average the rest. Some teams use the best time provided. And some teams use a time provided by their own scout on site.
Many players with incredible "reported" times have also done amazing things in the NFL, for example: Darrell Green ran an unofficial 4.09 in training camp for the Washington Redskins. He is considered by many as one of the best corners of all time. Many see him as the fastest man in NFL history, having won several NFL's Fastest Man competitions.
    • Bo Jackson ran a 4.12. As a part-time player, Bo averaged 5.4 yards per carry. He also had 221 rushing yards on November 30, 1987 (just 29 days after his first NFL carry), which is still a Monday Night Football record.
    • DeAngelo Hall, a cornerback currently playing for the Atlanta Falcons, ran a 4.15 second 40 yard dash.
    • Randy Moss, a wide receiver currently playing for the New England Patriots, ran a 4.25 second 40 yard dash. Moss currently holds the rookie TD reception record with 17 and the single-season TD reception record with 23.
    • Devin Hester ran a disappointing 4.45 40 at the 2006 NFL Scouting Combine, but is now considered one of the best kick returners in NFL history and holds numerous return records.
    • In 1986, André Action Jackson ran the 40-yard dash in 4.19 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, but chose to become a member of the Santa Monica Track Club and U.S. Track & Field team over the NFL, rather than follow in the footsteps of his brothers, Tom and Terence (T. J.)
    • Reggie Bush ran a 4.33, in 2006, he was the only rookie and the only running back to score a rushing TD and punt return TD. He also led the rookie running backs in receiving and set the NFL record for most catches by a NFL rookie running back
    • Heisman Trophy winner, Herschel Walker was said to have run a 4.25 (hand-timed) also for the Dallas Cowboys. He was a notable sprinter who also ran in the Olympic Trials.
The Fastest Players in the NFL include the following.
    1. Devin Hester (4.24 @ Miami Pro Day, 4.45 @ 2006 NFL Combine, 100 speed in Madden 08)
    2. Reggie Bush (4.33 @ University of USC at Pro Day 2006)
    3. Ike Taylor (4.18 @ University of Louisiana at Lafayette Pro Day)
    4. Laveranues Coles (4.16 @ Florida State University, 4.29 @ Jets Media Guide)
    5. Ahman Green (4.19 @ Pre-Draft Workout in Nebraska)
    6. Michael Puckett (4.19 @ Pre-Draft Workout at CCCC)
    7. Zach Rehmert (4.20 @ Pre- Draft workout at Collin College)
    8. Kevin Curtis (4.21 @ Utah State Pro Day)
    9. Donte Stallworth (4.22 @ 2003 Tennessee Pro Day)
    10. Willie Parker (4.23 @ 2004 North Carolina Pro Day)
    11. Randy Moss (4.25 @ Marshall University)
    12. Fabian Washington (4.29 @ 2005 NFL Combine)
    13. Champ Bailey (4.28 @ 1999 NFL Combine)
    14. Jerome Mathis (4.28 @ 2005 NFL Combine)
    15. Willis McGahee (4.28 @ Miami Pre-Injury)
    16. Michael Bennett (4.17 @ Wisconsin Pro Day, 4.37 @ 2001 NFL Combine)
Also, Bob Hayes won all but 1 race in the 40 yard dash back in the late 1960's, and he was once timed in 4.1. Back then, electronic timers only had 10ths of a second and didn't round, just stayed on a number until the next one was hit. In one race, he clocked in at 4.1. So figure it was probably under 4.2 but over 4.1 or somewhere in the neighborhood. They use to call the race, "King of the Hill" and it was raced in indoor track meets which NFL stars raced in.

That King of the Hill race was for pro-football players only. And the separation he would get was unbelievable, most times beating the field by at least a yard.
    Here's another source:
The NFL's fastest official 40 yard dash time was 4.25 seconds by cornerback Fabian Washington. Previous to electronic timing, Deion Sanders held the official record at 4.29 seconds. Here are some unofficial claims to players who have broken the 4.2 second mark.
    1. Ted Ginn Jr. (4.06)
    2. Alexander Wright (4.09)
    3. Michael Bennett (4.13)
    4. Bo Jackson (4.14)
    5. DeAngelo Hall (4.15)
    6. Darrell Green (4.15)
    7. Lavernaues Coles (4.16)
    8. Deion Sanders (4.17)
    9 Joey Galloway (4.18)
    10. Ahman Green (4.19)
    11. Laveranues Coles (4.2)
    12. Don Beebe (4.21)
    13. Donte Stallworth (4.22)
    14. Ryan Dotson (4.24)
    15. Michael Vick (4.25)
    16. Randy Moss (4.25)
    17. Willie Parker (4.23)
    18. Devin Hester (4.24)
    19. Champ Bailey (4.28)
    20. Willis McGahee (4.28)
    21. Stanford Routt (4.29)
    22. Fabian Washington(4.29)
    23. Reggie Bush (4.33)

Speaking to the immaturity on these boards: I swear that half of you guys aren't even out of elementary school yet. Do yourself a favor and finish that homework you've been putting off. You'll thank me years from now.
  • darrell
ive been out of elementary school for years and i know that more than half of the stuff mentioned isnt nearly as true. like tedd ginn jr. running a 4.06 thats not even logical to say when he ran about a 4.35 on his pro day.

  • Ryan Cheverton
All players mentioned are fast, even if some of the times (owens) are a stretch. Widey considered by players and coaches as fastest ever are Sanders and Rocket Ismail. Ismail ran an unofficial 4.16 40 in pads, 4.05 w/o. Believe this or not, Ismail backed this up by taking up indoor track as a "hobby" in '91, and won 23 55-meter races in row and had fastest 1991 time in the world at 6.07 seconds, only .07 off world record and good enough to beat several Olympians, including Fankie Fredericks. Sort of legitimizes his claims.
  • Ryan Cheverton
In addition to the above comment, I think people need to take care when comparing "track sprinter" times w/ combine and training camp times. The fact that football players post such phenomenal times, exaggerated or not, w/o specifically concentrating on the sport is spectacular and should impress everyone. Also, "breaking down" a 100M sprinter's time is misleading. When running a 40, 55 or 60 yd/meter race, the pacing is different than in the 100m or 200m. Many champions at those longer olympic distances ran relatively modest 40, 50, 60 times, only to blaze the final meters of the race. Comparing a 40 to a 100 is like comparing a 100 to a 200 or 400. Michael Johnson was wicked fast but could not have beaten Carl Lewis in the 100m.
  • Ryan Cheverton
Football is also known for having players w/ "game" or "field" speed. Some players, like T.O., or more notably, Jerry Rice, were not impressive in combines or on the track. many NFL DB's w/ blazing speed, including Darrell Green, were left behind by Rice during his storied career. Rice was infamous in the League for being "faster than whoever covered him".
  • Ray Perkins
Its Darrell Green. He ran 4.09 in 1986 before there were combines. He was a world class sprinter and is said to have beaten Carl Lewis head to head in a few meets. His 60 yard time, which is an indoor event, was at one time the 3rd fastest ever. Have you ever seen the clip where he comes from 20 yard behind and runs down Eric Dickerson? If you have seen it you would know.
  • D hall ran it
D HALL RAN IT IN A OFFICIAL 3.9 when he was 17 than when he was at nfl combine he ran 3.9
  • Josh
Bo Jackson ran a 4.12...I just watched a Video on the top 10 fastest players in the NFL...Deion Sanders was really fast but When Randy Moss first joined the NFL...Deion Sanders couldnt out run him...I watched Randy Moss Run a 4.10 4 times in a row at Marshall Stadium right before he got drafted in the NFL...He was doing his 40's for some NFL Scouts...I was there to witness it and its the truth trust me...he probably can still run a 4.25 or around that time...but I would like to Know how fast does Usain Bolt runs the 40...But today the fastest guy in the NFL is Devin Hester....

    yallareretarded is right!

The only times that count are the ones that are electronically recorded. Chris Johnson of East Carolina got himself into the record books at the NFL combine by running a 4.24 40-yard dash, tying Eastern Kentucky receiver Rondel Melendez for the fastest time ever recorded since the combine started using electronic timers in 1999.

Hey guys, how about the 60 yd dash? Does anybody know what the record is in the 60? I know it isn't kept up with like the 40, but I was just wondering because way back when I was 20 years old in 1980, I was clocked two different times in the 60 yd dash at 6 flat. It's rare to ever hear the announcers talk about the 60, but I once heard that Herschel Walker ran it in 6.2, so I felt pretty good about doing it at 6.0. I guess I didn't do too bad, for a white boy.

Happy New Year and be careful Jim.

  • hey
Big D 5 minutes is freakin slow alright. The average highschooler runs at 5 seconds flat so 5 minutes is incredibly slow. Many people can walk faster for the 40 yard dsh then you could run. It is REALLY slow. Your school must've been slow or you must've been way faster if you were a college sprinter becuase a baby runs faster than that. Get it that you are slow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bo jackson for sure has ran a 4.18 at 6'2" and 230lbs. his personal rule was to give a lick rather than receive one, so he would first run you over and then outrun you if option one wasn't available. only caught from behind one time(jerry gray, Texas 1984) EVER. remember, there is track speed and then there is game speed. only the great ones have both(Bo, Deion, a few others)
  • Bo Jackson had a 4.1. He's raced Olympic sprinters. They said he kept up the whole way, until the very end where they'd edge him out.
That dude that said Bo was 230 needs to watch some Sportscenter because he's talking out his ass.
Bo was 210 when he was in shape, and yes a guy 210 can run that fast.

I've seen Michael Bennett run the 100 3 times in HS, and that dude is fast. He ran a 10.2 electronic. He qualified for the Olympic Trials while at Wisconsin. He's a notoriously slow starter, but that may have improved from his HS days. With 100M=110yds, that puts his AVERAGE 40 at 4.0 within that 100m.
  • Jack Hammer
I, personally, timed Daniel Lasco at 4.27, but that was at 172 lbs. He's at 191 now and I will not be timing him until this fall. Word has it that Harold Howell (Florida HS?) once ran a 4.11.
  • shawn
just about everyone on here has no clue wat they are talkin about. nobody has ever ran a 40 in less than 4 sec. the fastest time ever OFFICIALLY RECORDED was bo jackson at his pro day. he was clocked at 4.12. the fastest unofficial time ever recorded was darrell green and yes he was clocked at 4.09. and if you think im lying then go onto wikipedia and look up darrell green. he outran olympic gold medalist carl lewis in the 100 meter dash as a sophmore in college. deion was fast but darrell green won the fastest man competition every year he was in the nfl and he is the only person to ever chase down tony dorsett from behind. deion cant say that

You can't trust hand timed 40s because they are usually .24 faster then they should be. When the NFL started using electric timers in 1990 the fastest is a 4.24 by Chris Johnson. So the person who said Darrel Green ran a 4.09 if you add .24 to that it's way more realistic.
  • Fballdude

Daniel Lasco a Sophmore from The Woodlands High School in Texas really did run a 4.14 forty but it was with a .24 deduction to it so offically it would be a 4.38 which is still amazing. That would of be the fastest time for a running back in this years NFL combine!

Rahghib Ismael (excuse the spelling if its incorrect) "supposedly" ran a near 4 flat 40 while working out for scouts. Demps (FLa) has recorded times of 10.01 and 10.02 in the 100. LSU has a 10 flat runner. When's the last time you saw an upper level NCAA or NFL player without pads run 40 yards with no cuts and no hinderences. YOU HAVEN'T. Its called track and field. The 40 yard times in shorts are almost as predictive as the 60 yard times in MLB. Its the 275 lb. linebackers that run 5 or 5.5 40s that make the 4's of no matter.

Had Mickey Mantle played in the NFL, he would have been one of the fastest running backs ever. He and Bo Jackson are considered the fastest to run from home to first base--both doing it in 2.9 seconds from the right hand batters box. Maybe this time is not accurate because it was not electronically timed. Still, in their day, hand held timers were all they had and no one was timed faster than these two. In a lecture to a gathering of sports writers after he retired, Mantle said that in his day, 40-40 wasn't a big deal. If it had been, he would have done it every year. He was being serious, not boasting. For you non-baseball types, 40-40 means 40 home runs, and 40 base steals. Incidentally, the only two substances Mantle used were nicotine and alcohol. In Mantle's day, these were the typical drugs of choice.

anyone who says that it can be run under a 4.0 is full of shit. if you look at film of Usain Bolt who is easily the fastest runner of all time (that really isn't even an argument), you will see why. when he runs the 40, his split after 40 yards is a little under 4.1. however, there is human error involved. when he sprints, he reacts to the sound of the bullet. this takes about .1-.2 seconds (he is amazingly trained so about .1). in the nfl combine, it is the opposite. the coaches react and start it when the runner starts. because of this, there is a margin of error of about .1-.2 percent between their actual speed and their nfl 40 speed. so really, Bolt would probably run a sub 4.0 and probably close to a 3.9. i doubt anyone runs near that in the nfl.
