Flag On The Play: Holding Call Missed During 15 Lateral Play By Trinity

October 29, 2007

The amazing play by Trinity should have never happened. Don’t get me wrong. It was truly amazing and my heart goes out to all those guys that didn’t give up but….if you look at this video..at approximately 0:02, look to the left of the quarterback and tell me that no flag should have been thrown….the lineman holds the defender for more than four seconds!

Now, I know technically there is holding on every play.

Holding is called during the following situation, “The key is to penalize the illegal hold where it impacts the play. For example, the running back is hitting the 4 hole on a dive. While he receives the hand-off, the offensive tackle grabs the defensive lineman and turns him to the outside of the hole and the running back slides through the hole for a large gain. This is called holding at the point of attack, and must be called every time.”

This was without a doubt “holding at the point of attack.” After all, it is a great thing this call was missed! What an amazing play.
