The Pro Football Hall of Fame Will Debate “The Stolen 1925 Championship”
Sit back and get ready, because now its on…I mean really on! On April 18th, 2008, Joe Horrigan, Vice President of the Pro Football Hall of Fame will come to Pottsville, Pennsylvania (home of Yuengling) to debate the much anticipated return of “The Stolen NFL 1925 Championship” with ESPN senior writer and Maroons supporter David Fleming. The debate will be held at the newly reconstructed Sovereign Majestic Theater in downtown Pottsville.
According to the Pottsville Republican, Horrigan will take the viewpoint opposing Fleming, an opinion that by their own choice and despite repeated warnings, the Maroons disobeyed an NFL rule and therefore do not deserve the title. Jim Coles the main sports anchor for WNEP-Newswatch 16 (A Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania News Network) will moderate the debate between Horrigan and Fleming.
The debate will surley keep the Pottsville Maroons in the recently acquired national spotlight. Fleming has done an outstanding job of circulating his most recent book about the Maroons “Breaker Boys: The NFL’s Greatest Team and the Stolen 1925 Championship“. It has been said to be “selling faster than Harry Potter” in the community and surrounding areas. The February edition of ESPN The Magazine showcased an article about the Maroons and the curse that is said to be held over the cardinals franchise by Maroon fans for their unethical acceptance of the championship.
The Republican also stated that about 150 tickets — about two-thirds of the seats — will be raffled off March 30 at The REPUBLICAN & Herald, 111 Mahantongo St., Pottsville. Free tickets will be distributed in the random drawing, while the remaining seats will be reserved for invited guests.
The debate is the next important step in justifying the unreasonable events that took place in 1925. Fumbled.org supports the Maroons and hopes to see the title returned to its home, Pottsville Pennsylvania! GO DAVE!!!

I was the person who was misled into staging a post office event to honor the 75th anniversary of the Maroon bogus victory in 2000. The post office in Pottsville produced a commemorative cancellation and commemorative envelopes for his event. I did this as a member of the USPS board from the private community as part of giving something back to the community where I was raised. We (myself and the post office) were presented with bogus information by the then head of the Maroon committee, some published by the local newspaper years ago, claiming that the Maroon team was the true 1925 NFL Champ. At the time, the current man behind pushing this negative agenda, Ian Lipton, wasn’t even a mmeber of the Maroon Committee or in attendance…same for the current Mayor of Pottsville. Only after this event, was I informed that there was a more factual side to this argument. I then proceeded to do my own research and eventually the USPS officially apologized to the NFL Football Commissioner. I felt very misled and embarassed. Had we been given the “other side of the coin” the USPS would have still honored the Maroon team as a great NFL team who beat the
Four Horsemen at the first exhibition game ever. This is what Pottsville should be promoting in my opinion…the fact that they once had a great NFL team that could have been the 1925 Champs had the owner obeyed NFL Commissioner Carr. One liners about telephone calls giving Dr. S. permission to play don’t cut it. Mr. Flemming is indeed a very skillful writer. sIf you have any doubt, just go to the Pottsville Library and have them order in the microfilm of the big city newspapers and read about the warnmings to the Maroon owner that were published, not once, but multiple times with the consequenes clearly stated. If Ian Lipton believes that he can persuade Joe Horrigan to join his camp, I personally think that he will be VERY disappointed. Mr. Horrigan will be a fVERY formadable oppenent in the upcoming debate of April 08. I only hope that the local newspaper will finally report both sides of the debate accurately without injecting their own spin. It is time that the citizens of Schuylkill County find out the true facts. This is just another example of revisionist history similar to the campaign to have the Mollie leaders pardoned for their crimes.
Please note the debate is April 18th, 2008….not 2007. It would be nice to turn back the clock as easy as daylight savings to change history. It should be noted that regardless of the outcome of the debate several positive things have come about as a result of Dave Fleming writing this book. The first is seeing a community once again rallying around a common goal. This is a daunting task for Pottsville, but it is well worth it. Think of the hours spent not only in recent months, but over the years trying to return the championship to the Maroons mantle. This builds spirit. Although the championship may never rest in the hands of Pottsville, don’t you think the players, families, and residents have already reached a lofty position? The true measure of greatness is time. This story has been told for generations and will continue in the years to come. The second great thing about this story is proof to our children and youth that anything is possible. This story has received attention from Roger Goodell, President Bush, HBO, and ESPN. I think that speaks volumes for our children when we tell them anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Thanks Dave.
